LIGHTNING KILLS A TEENAGER WASHING HANDS IN RAINWATER


A 15-year-old boy died while three others were injured when lightning struck the goat shed they were in. The deceased was identified as Mohd Zamanqusyairi Ismail from Pak Katak Village, Bukit Tunggal here. He was a student of Bukit Tunggal High School.

The other three – Shamsul Rani, 32, who is a cousin of the deceased, Khairi Fatullah Mohd Zaid, 21, and a 14-year-old schoolmate Muhammad Syawal Imran Zakaria – were admitted to the hospital after the 4.30pm incident.

At the Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah, Shamsul said they were at the shed that belonged to Zamanqusyairi’s father.  “We were preparing small bamboo cages to catch fish. “It started to rain heavily at about 3.45pm and we carried on with what we were doing.

“Zamanqusyairi got up and walked about a meter away from where we were seated to wash his hands with the rain water that was dripping from the roof. “All of a sudden, lightning struck and I fell off from where I was seated. We were all unconscious for some minutes,” Shamsul said, adding that when they came to, they found Zamanqusyairi motionless.

“Our efforts to revive him were futile. We informed his father who then called the paramedics,” he added. Zamanqusyairi was pronounced dead by the paramedics.
